  • 75 g dark vegan chocolate
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 2/3 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups plant-based milk
  • 3/4 cup neutral oil (e.g., canola)
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 75 g dark vegan chocolate (for buttercream)
  • 1 cup vegan butter (baking stick)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for buttercream)
  • 5 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted (for buttercream)
  • 24 tbsp plant-based milk (for buttercream)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for buttercream)
  • 1/4 cup canned coconut milk (for ganache)
  • 80 g dark vegan chocolate (for ganache)
  • 1/21 kg dark vegan chocolate (for decorations)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare your baking pans.
  2. Melt the dark chocolate until smooth and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, combine dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, sea salt, and baking soda.
  4. In another bowl, mix wet ingredients: plant-based milk, oil, vinegar, vanilla extract, and melted chocolate.
  5. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  6. Divide batter among prepared pans and bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool.
  7. Prepare the buttercream by beating vegan butter until creamy; gradually add cocoa powder and confectioners’ sugar while mixing.
  8. Assemble layers with buttercream in between; top with ganache made from coconut milk and dark chocolate.
  9. Decorate with molded chocolate skulls.
