  • 1 egg yolk
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ tablespoons sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Black food coloring
  • Red food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together hot milk and egg yolk; microwave for an additional 25–30 seconds if necessary.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and yeast until blended.
  3. Combine warm milk mixture with butter and salt; stir until combined.
  4. Knead dough by hand for about 10 minutes or with a mixer for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  5. Divide dough into portions; let rest briefly covered with a tea towel.
  6. Color one portion black and another red; knead until fully colored.
  7. Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1.5 hours).
  8. Punch down the risen dough and gently shape it into your desired loaf form before its second rise (about another hour).
  9. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for approximately 30 minutes or until hollow-sounding when tapped.
  10. Cool completely before slicing.
